-ditch effort to avoid the fiscal cliff. even though the president is returning on thursday, we may not see the senate roll out its bill to deal with the fiscal cliff. perhaps for a couple of days. this is entirely possible we've learned from sources as senate majority leader harry reid works to get republican support in the senate, which he will need if he's going to pass a bill. and so we're still waiting to see exactly what it will look like that the white house wants for the threshold on income tax rates to cut off at $250,000. we will see if that ultimately is what senate majority leader reid rolls out. as of this point in time, we're expecting this to be a limited measure to deal just really with the fiscal cliff, which was supposed to be appear incentive to deal with the long-term fiscal health of the country. not part of this, obviously looking at a big package. >> can you do this even if everything goes right? getting through the two houses. i don't think the house is anywhere near -- they couldn't get a million collars for the cap of the tax rates expiring. so what is the position

to try to avoid that fiscal cliff. reena ninan is traveling with the president. she joins us, now, from honolulu, hawaii. reena, has there been any movement to try to reach a compromise here? >> reporter: it doesn't seem that either side -- the president or the white house has reached out to either side over this christmas break. no movement moving forward on these fiscal cliff talks. the focus will shift to the senate. they have to try to craft something together that will pass both the house and the senate. so, the burden is now on them to try to strike some sort of a deal. that's because on friday before congress left for christmas, the house was unable to get any sort of a deal passed through. >> and, reena, give us a play-by-play. what can we expect this week? where will the white house be focusing their efforts? >> reporter: right. as i mentioned, capitol hill, now, taking the emphasis over at the senate side. the other concern that the white house does have is to make sure that they come to their different party lines. the democrats want to see, obviously, the middle class not fa

the unemployment situation. right now with the fiscal cliff, i am currently unemployed and i am concerned about the fiscal cliff. i am on a federal extension. i do not know if i'm going to get a paycheck to be able to pay my mortgage in january. two million people are set to lose their federal extensions in january and unemployment rate has come down due to attrition. people are not being counted. once you stop drawing benefits, you are counted as being unemployed. if you force two million people at once into the job market with the fraudulent unemployment numbers, how are these people going to get back to work? i was laid off in 2009 and i've had three different jobs. the type of employment being offered is often part-time work and it is a series of stringing together reemployment. you never really get back to work. it takes longer than six months to get back to work. you're going to be laid off again within six to eight months. maybe they did not extend it again after 2013 or after 2012. you get back to work after being employed temporarily. they continually whittled down the beaks. it is pr
